A Matter of Place: Why Location Remains the most Important Factor in Apartment Hunting

“Location, location, location” remains the battle cry of real estate experts giving advice to apartment hunters. The apartment's proximity to key places of employment, transportation, and businesses remains high on the desirability checklists. But why is this so?

A common error committed by first-time apartment hunters is putting a low priority on location. Too many tenants spend too much time looking for the trimmings of their perfect apartment—the quality of the fixtures, the appearance, and the square footage—with its proximity almost as an afterthought. And on the surface, it seems logical. Wouldn't nicer, roomier, or more affordable apartments be more desirable in the first place?

Although there is no denying the benefits of having additional elbow room in any residence or a pleasant neighborhood, these in and among themselves cannot outweigh that presented by an apartment that's simply located in a more ideal community closer to key places and amenities.

An apartment being in a good location does not simply mean that it is merely located in a nice neighborhood. An ideal location is determined mainly by its relative proximity to important places, foremost among them is the place of work, and amenities like parks, schools, and nearby businesses. The time saved in travel alone more than justifies choosing an apartment on the grounds of location alone.

The state of the neighborhood and other things like crime rates also play in. The atmosphere of a neighborhood determines much of its livability, and a safe location greatly improves one's peace of mind.
